wants to purchase it however these body armors and other ballistic vests are
not cheap in their purchasing price and unfortunately, due to economic crisis,
some people considers the option of saving money by buying used equipment. This
is not recommended simple because of a number of reasons. Let us tackle them
one by one.
_
1. Not the same strength and integrity – a used piece of body armor is dangerous simply because it will not have the same strength and integrity it used to have. In short, this means that the body armor has less stopping strength and that may make a difference of whether or not a projectile will be deadly. Let us say that the body armor has never had a bullet, but then again blunt force trauma or stabbing it may still make it weaker and less reliable. The materials and fabric are also weakened due to the moisture it experience like rain or sweating. If you remember it right, the NIJ has testing for weather conditions, as well. 2. No insurance – no insurance is given to used body armor and it will be impossible to have such when it is already a second hand. This may not be life threatening for now but it has serious effects on the wounded person and their family. Life insurance on the vest do not cover deaths if cause by using faulty gear, into which category used by body gear falls into. There is no insurance on used equipment. 3. Outdated body armor – the condition of let us say for example, 3a body armor may be outdated. This makes a body armor just as dangerous. Wearing outdated body armor may be as dangerous as wearing none at all. |
