_ Body armor, whether it is a type 4 or type 3a body armor,
is a protective clothing designed to stop bullets and projectiles from hitting
the wearer and causing much damage to the one wearing the clothing. Modern body
armors are also known as bullet proof vests. Although it is called that way,
body armors are completely not bullet proof just like the bullet proof
vehicles. They are much appropriately called body resistant vests. Currently,
there is no available body armor that can stop all bullets. These bullet proof
vests are used by the police, the army and private security as their defaults
vests.

The design and materials have evolved with time. In the last century, the evolution has rocketed following the development of ammunition technology. Over time, the National Institute of Justice had developed the USA standards for body armor classification. The different types of body armor are characterized by increasing protection power. The classification is not easy, due to a large number of available ammunition calibers and the variations among similar caliber cartridges. The USA standards for body armor in relation with common threats to law enforcement officers are seven and can be found in the NIJ Standard 0101.04. According to the NIJ’s standard, type 1, 2a, 2 and 3a body armors are the ones that protect against handgun threats while types 3 and 4 also protect against high powered rifle rounds. For now, we will be talking about type 3a body armor. Type 3a (High velocity 9mm; .44 Magnum) – this armor protects against 9mm full metal jacketed round nost (FMJ RN) bullets, with nominal masses of 8.0 g (124 gr), impacting at a minimum velocity of 427 m/a (1400 ft/s) or less and .44 Magnum jacketed hollow point (JHP) bullets, with nominal masses of 15.6 g (240 gr), impacting at a minimum velocity of 427 m/s (1400 ft/s) or less. It also provides protection against most handgun threats, as well as the type 1, 2a and 3 threats. Currently, type 3a body armor provides the highest level of protection currently available from the concealable body armor. |
